OpenSense is a comprehensive
IT infrastructure monitoring system that collects availability and performance
data for networks, systems, applications, and security. OpenSense
notifies response personnel of each incident and performs needed escalations
using email, pagers, and wireless devices. Comprehensive reports
are provided identifying trends and exceptions for service level, availability,
incident, and capacity management.

The benefits derived from the use of OpenSense include:
- Fewer and shorter infrastructure outages increase corporate productivity
and operational results
- Increasing the fraction of IT work performed situationally instead
of reactively raises IT productivity
- Reduced trouble shooting times for outages raises IT productivity
- The monitoring system collects measurements used as the primary input
to the management of service levels, availability, capacity, and incident
management thus further reducing the frequency and duration of outages
and further reducing costs. In a word you can only manage what
you measure.
The standardized elements of OpenSense all contribute to its low cost
and include the following:
- Design and Coverage Specification. Open Sense covers interface
status for all switches and routers, availability status for all server,
hardware, and availability of all production applications, databases,
and mail systems. External port based availability scans for
all production applications, and agent based measures for CPU, memory,
and disk utilization statistics for NT and Unix servers, and NT Services
availability. Dependencies between network and monitoring
topology and derived alarms are fully exploited to reduce the incidence
of false alarms as are optimal event pre-processing techniques.
- Implementation Methodology and Tools. Each GroundWork project
consists of a design, implementation, and calibration/training phase. Standardized
deliverables are customized to customer requirements for each phase.
- Integrated Bundle of Open Source Software for monitoring
The optional modules of OpenSense work together to make the system truly
comprehensive and include the following:
- Network Traffic Analysis
- SQL Server Specific Monitors
- Synthetic Transactions For "Black Box" Application Performance Monitoring
- Support Services including GroundWork Support, Escalation Assurance,
Remote GroundWork System Management, Monitoring Performance Audits,
and Remote NOC Services
