The Standby Server is fully operational at all times. During normal operation, it performs local host service checks together with any service checks configured for trap or log file processing. The Standby Server also receives any traps and system log messages so that the Console is ready for use at any time. Any check commands that have been configured to create alarms upon the arrival of particular traps or log messages will operate normally on both the Primary and Standby Servers.
If the Primary Server were to fail, the Standby Server immediately commences active checks, notifications, and collection of performance data. Initially after the Standby Server cutover, the service checks will be in a status of pending. These status values will be updated as each of the service checks is scheduled, runs, and reports results. Approximately fifteen minutes after the cutover, the system will be displaying accurate status information both in the Status Viewer and the Console.
Once the Primary Server returns to service, the Standby Server returns to its standby state, ceasing active checks, notifications, and collection of performance data. Note that the performance and availability data collected by the Standby when the Primary Server was down is not restored to the Primary Server.
