This foundation of open source software results in a solution that is affordable, highly flexible and configurable to accommodate varied and rapidly changing environments.
GroundWork Monitor Professional Architecture
Starting with core open source components such as Nagios (an availability monitoring tool) and MySQL (the leading open source database), GroundWork has added performance monitoring, Guava, a PHP portal-based user framework for user interface development, real-time status views, an integrated event console, management level reporting and powerful web-based configuration tools. The result is a complete and integrated system.
GroundWork's integrated open source architecture includes three layers of functionality: a tools/adapter layer, a services layer, and a presentation layer, shown in the figure above. This architecture is completely open and extensible for developers seeking to incorporate additional data sources or build presentation-layer applications, views and reports.
Adapter layer - extracts data from IT monitoring tools
- Open source monitoring systems (e.g., Nagios, SYSLOG NG, SNMP TT)
Services layer - normalizes and stores IT monitoring data in a database
- Data transformation, normalization
- Data storage and GroundWork data model
- Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) - enables presentation layer applications, reports, and displays to access and process IT data
Presentation layer - displays data needed by operators and managers to monitor and manage an IT infrastructure

GroundWork Monitor Professional's presentation layer is built over a PHP framework that allows for dynamic database driven applications via web pages. Using new Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX, pages constantly refresh seamlessly in the background, without user-initiated screen actions. Open APIs that are provided let you further customize your own views as needed.
